The Flyers honored their late founder’s impact on what would have been his 91st birthday with the Ed Snider Legacy Game on Saturday, January 6. The team showed their continued commitment to supporting Ed Snider Youth Hockey & Education by including Snider students in various activities throughout the day.
Flyers players arrived to the Wells Fargo Center wearing custom Snider travel jerseys. Following the game, each player generously signed their own jerseys, which are now available for purchase at the Snider Marketplace.
Prior to the game, the Flyers and Flyers Charities announced a $300,000 gift to Snider, which will go towards the construction of a new outdoor street hockey rink, similar to the one completed at Scanlon Recreation Center last year. This gift will make an even larger impact, as it’s subject to a 2:1 match put in place by Ed Snider. Prior to his passing, Ed Snider had the foresight to create a legacy that will allow him to match all donations for years to come. This donation will help ensure that Ed Snider’s impact continues to help build lives and unite communities throughout the City of Philadelphia, while growing the game of hockey.
Snider students gained special access to team activities during pre-game, including watching warm-ups from the home bench and penalty box, greeting players as they entered the tunnel, and standing on the blue line with Flyers players during the American and Canadian national anthems.
While their teammates and friends cheered the Flyers on their way to a 3-2 win against Calgary, a group of Snider students in attendance rode the Zambonis and took part in Mites on Ice during the second intermission.
