Staff Spotlight – Kris Zapata

Staff Spotlight – Kris Zapata

Ed Snider Youth Hockey & Education is proud of the work that our staff do on and off the ice. In order to spotlight the outstanding effort they put into the organization, we regularly interview a staff member about their time with Snider.

Our latest Staff Spotlight features Kris Zapata, Alumni Coach. Kris started his Snider journey as a student at Pennsauken. Each year, he coaches at Snider summer camps, making an effort to connect with students every time he is at the rink.

What made you want to get involved in hockey in the first place?

Getting into hockey was actually thanks to my childhood friend, Kyle. He told me about a local program, and since I was already into roller skating at a sports center, I asked my parents if I could try ice skating.

How did you first get involved with Snider?

My involvement with Snider kicked off when I went to the rink with Kyle and met Coach Dan Rudd at Pennsauken. It’s been a fantastic experience ever since.

What is your favorite memory with Snider?

I’ve made so many great memories with Snider, but two really stand out: getting to skate at the Flyers vs. Rangers Winter Classic game, and the trip to Sweden I took with my teammate Tyreese.

Were there any coaches that inspired you to coach today?

When it comes to coaches who’ve inspired me, there are so many I could mention from both my playing and coaching days. Nick Allison, Tim Larkin, Taylor Arcaini, Rich Ferro, and Dan Rudd have all had a huge impact on me.

What would you say is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job during summer camps is seeing the players I’ve coached, whether it was a few camps ago, months ago, or even years ago, develop and grow, not just as players but as people too. It’s incredibly rewarding.

What do you enjoy most about working with your colleagues?

I really enjoy working with my colleagues because we’re all focused on the same thing: making sure the players learn something valuable and have a genuinely enjoyable experience at camp. When we have a smooth, well-managed practice plan, it makes camp better for everyone involved.

What’s one achievement that you’re particularly proud of?

One achievement I’m particularly proud of is consistently making the dean’s list every semester. It’s something I’ve worked hard on.

What is one thing you have learned about yourself on the job?

Through this job, I’ve learned a lot about myself. I’ve realized how important it is to show kids that they’re capable of more and can absolutely achieve their goals if they believe in themselves. I’ve also really developed my patience and persistence in helping players grasp drills or concepts we’re teaching.
