Scott Tharp - President/CEO
Scott Tharp was named President/CEO of the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation in May 2007. He formerly served as the Executive Director of Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis and Education, which for many years has been a national model for youth enrichment programming. With a similar mission to Snider Hockey, this organization is known for providing quality tennis and educational programming to thousands of children, many coming from underserved inner-city communities. Scott is devoted to public service and has long believed that sport can be a powerful force in youth development - when coupled with the delivery of life skills and academic programming, the return in social capital is immeasurable.
Scott attended Old Dominion University and the College of William & Mary where he majored in Communication. He obtained a graduate certificate in Public Administration at Wilmington University. Scott is a veteran of the United States Coast Guard. He currently serves as an officer on the Board of Directors of the Goals & Assists Foundation, a 501 c 3 non-profit devoted to providing post-secondary scholarships to deserving Snider Hockey students. He also is a Trustee of the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Support Organization and the Chairman of the PTR Foundation, which is the charitable arm of the Professional Tennis Registry. Scott has served as an advisor for the Sports Management programs at Queens University and Methodist University, and on the Board of Directors for USTA/Middle States. He was inducted into the Unites States Tennis Association/Middle States Hall of Fame in 2015 and was the 2007 recipient of Thomas Jacoby Service Award from the Philadelphia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Jan Koziara - Executive Vice President
Jan Koziara joined the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation as Manager, Hockey Operations in January of 2007 to oversee the Foundation's on and off-ice programming and assist in the development of strategies to expand the reach of the Foundation. He was named Director, Hockey Operations in 2008. Prior to joining Snider Hockey, Jan worked as a management consultant for six years in New York City and Boston.
Jan learned to play hockey in Philadelphia at Rizzo Rink and went on to play and coach Division III College Ice Hockey at Tufts University while earning a B.A and M.A. in Economics. While living in New York, he coached both girls and boys ranging in age from 3 to 63 while an instructor and coach with Central Park Ice Hockey. In 2010, Jan was certified as a USA Hockey Master Coach (Level 5) after writing a thesis that investigated ways Snider Hockey could implement USA Hockey’s Athletic Development Model. Katy Hsieh - Director, Development
Katy Hsieh joined the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation Development Staff in May 2015. An advocate for youth development through sport and education, Katy is responsible for overseeing all fundraising and development functions of Snider Hockey including donor engagement, grant writing, and special events. She also facilitates corporate partnerships, scholarship funding, and tax credit programs. Prior to her time at Snider Hockey, Katy served as the Development Officer at the Rodney Street Tennis & Tutoring Association in Wilmington, DE. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Integrated Marketing Communication from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. Katy coaches U14 girls lacrosse as well as K-5 soccer. Chris Newton - Director, Evaluation & Program Support
Chris Newton joined the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation in June 2007 as an Intern. After graduating Magna Cum Laude from the University of Louisville with a M.S. in Sport Administration, Newton became the first Coordinator, Hockey Programs for Snider Hockey. He was promoted to Manager, Hockey Programs in July 2012 and is now responsible for providing structure, support, and insights to the entire organization to ensure that Snider Hockey has the tools, vision, and resources to maximize its impact in his role as Director, Evaluation & Program Support. Chris is a native of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada and completed his undergraduate studies at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, NS where he graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Finance. He also holds a Certificate in Human Resource Management from Saint Mary's. In 2010, Chris attained the Level 4-Advanced Level Coaching certificate from USA Hockey. Dan Rudd - Director, Hockey Programs
Dan Rudd joined the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation as a Programming Intern in the spring of 2007. Dan attended DeSales University where he majored in Sport Management and played four years on the school's club ice hockey team. Dan was then hired full time in 2009 to run Snider Hockey’s programming in New Jersey at the Pennsauken Skate Zone. Since then he has overseen the creation and growth of the Snider Hockey DVHL program and focused on overall hockey program development Snider Hockey wide. Additionally, he has coached various Snider Hockey travel teams from the Squirt to the Midget level. Dan holds USA Hockey Level 5 “Master” coaching accreditation and has completed USA Hockey’s Hockey Director Certification Course and acts as Snider Hockey’s DVHL rep and USA Hockey registrar. Jenni Brozena - Manager, Development
Jenni Brozena joined the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation in 2017. Jenni is a graduate of West Chester University of Pennsylvania where she currently serves as a Board Member for the College of Health Sciences, and California University of Pennsylvania where she received the Pursuit of Excellence Award for her work in sport science. Prior to joining Snider Hockey, Jenni created multi-site revenue streams for a thriving sports medicine practice and led an athlete development business through domestic and international expansion. Dennis Cunard - Manager, Human Resources
Dennis Cunard joined the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation as a Programming Intern during the summer of 2011. Dennis was hired as a Coach with Snider Hockey after graduating from Rutgers University with a B.S. in Exercise Science and Sport Studies, Sport Management Option. While attending Rutgers University, Dennis played for the Rutgers ACHA Division 2 team and was named Captain for his senior season. Dennis has coached hockey for over 10 years and is certified as a USA Hockey Level 4 coach. Dennis was hired in November 2012 as Coordinator, Hockey Operations where he was the Site Coordinator for Tarken Recreation Center until December of 2016. Zack Damico - Manager, Travel Hockey Programs
Zack Damico joined the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation as an Intern during the summer of 2010 and was promoted to Coach in the fall of 2010. He took a leading role at Simons Recreation Center and was an Assistant Coach of Snider Hockey’s inaugural Bantam B U14 DVHL team. Zack was promoted to Manager, Hockey Programs in July, 2017. He currently oversees the DVHL travel program for Snider Hockey. Zack has over 20 years of experience playing and coaching ice hockey. He played travel and high school hockey growing up in Western Pennsylvania and went on to play club ice hockey at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated with a B.S. in Sports Management. Zack has coached at all levels from Mite to collegiate women’s hockey. He also earned his Level 5 - Master Coaching Education Program certification in Lake Placid from USA Hockey in 2018. Sam Napierkowski - Manager, Education Programs
Sam Napierkowski joined the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation as one of the organization’s first Academic Interns in the spring of 2013. Following her internship, Sam was hired as an Academic Assistant at Scanlon Ice Rink. In the spring of 2015, she was promoted to Coordinator, Postsecondary Success and oversaw the further development of programming and initiatives to support Snider Hockey’s oldest students with their future educational or professional success. Since then, there has been a lot of growth in programming. She is currently the Manager of Education Programs and now oversees Academic Programs, which provided supplemental educational opportunities to Snider Hockey students, along with tutoring support; Middle School Programs, which supports students during the high school selection process; High School Programs, which helps our student explore and plan out their plan after high school graduation; and Alumni Program, which supports Snider Hockey Alumni in completing postsecondary education and finding a career. Sam grew up in Philadelphia – only minutes away from Scanlon – and attended J.R. Masterman High School. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a B.A. in Urban Studies. Gil Schaffer - Manager, Life Skills Programs
Gil Schaffer joined Snider Hockey in January 2011 as an Intern. Following his graduation from Rutgers University in May 2011 with a B.S. in Exercise Science and Sport Studies, he was promoted to Coach. In January 2012, Gil was hired full-time as Coordinator, Hockey Programs and began supervising Snider Hockey programs at the Flyers Skate Zone in Pennsauken, NJ. In the following years he was promoted to Senior Coordinator and then Manager of Hockey Programs, overseeing East Rink programming as well as Coach Development. In 2019, Gil was named Manager of Life Skills Programs. He is responsible for leading Snider Hockey’s Life Skills Programs team as well as continuing to support our coaching development efforts. Additionally, Gil coaches the Snider Hockey U18 National team.
Gil has over 25 years of hockey experience both playing and coaching, and has been a natural leader on and off the ice. Gil finished his high school career as Steinert High School's all-time leading goal scorer, and went on to Rutgers University where he was named team captain following his sophomore season. He captained the team to its first two ACHA - Division 1 National Championships appearances in consecutive seasons. Gil is a USA Hockey Level 5 Master certified coach and was named the 2019 USA Hockey Atlantic District Youth Coach of the Year. He currently resides in Mercer County, NJ with his wife Alyse. Hilary Maggio - Specialist, Community Resources
Hilary Maggio joined the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation in 2014 as a College Counselor. In September 2017, she was promoted to Coordinator, High School Programs. In April 2018, she transitioned into a new role as Specialist, Community Resources. Hilary received her B.A. in Urban Studies and Sociology from Temple University in 2009, and returned to Temple for graduate school where she received her Masters of Social Work in 2015. While in graduate school, Hilary focused on clinical social work, with a particular concentration on health and mental health in communities impacted by mass incarceration. Hilary is a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP) with over 10 years of youth development experience, and prior to joining Snider Hockey full-time worked in a number of alternative education programs as well as outpatient mental health and substance abuse settings. Jake Scott - Specialist, Data & Evaluation
Jake Scott joined the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation as a Programming Intern in the fall of 2015. Originally from Michigan, Jake played Division III college tennis at Kalamazoo College, where he received his B.A. in Mathematics and Computer Science. Previously Jacob also worked as an Assistant Tournament Director for the USTA Boys National Championship hosted in Kalamazoo. Following his internship with Snider Hockey in 2015, Jake worked remotely as a Program Assistant focusing on data projects and student retention before joining Snider Hockey full time as Coordinator, Data & Program Metrics in the summer of 2017. Most recently, Jake was promoted to Specialist, Data & Program Metrics. An avid Detroit sports fan, Jake is currently continuing his education at Temple University working towards his Masters Degree in Sports Business and Analytics. Summer Haran - Chief Development Strategist
Summer Haran joined the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation Development in June 2019. Prior to her time at Snider Hockey, Summer worked for three professional Philadelphia sports teams. As a public relations intern for the Philadelphia Flyers, she worked on the 2018-19 media guide, game notes and media briefings. She was also on the public relations game day staff for the Philadelphia 76ers and Philadelphia Wings. Summer graduated from the University of Delaware in 2018 with a B.A. in Communications. She gained experience in the sports industry working as a communications assistant in Delaware’s athletic department for various sports. Jeremy Gillam - Senior Coordinator, Life Skills Programs
Jeremy Gillam joined the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation as a Volunteer in 2013 before being hired as a Coach. In 2014, he was promoted to the position of Assistant Site Coordinator at Simons Recreation Center. He earned his B.A. from Albright College and his M.A. of the Humanities from Arcadia University, concentrating in Philosophy at both institutions. His major areas of study included the Philosophy of History, Science, Psychology and Ethics. He recently attained his Level III Coaching Certification from USA Hockey in 2015. Jeremy has always been passionate about athletics, playing a multitude of sports throughout his youth before specializing in NCAA Div. III Golf and Club Hockey at Albright. Following his promotion to Coordinator, Life Skills & Healthy Living in September 2015, he is now excited to be working towards developing comprehensive educational, health and wellness programs that positively support Snider Hockey families. Casey Kilduff - Senior Coordinator, Girls Hockey Programs
Casey Kilduff joined the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation as a Coach in January 2015. She began at Rizzo Rink and shortly moved to Simons Recreation Center. She took on a leadership role as SPARKS Coordinator at Simons and coach for the Girls' Development team. Casey was promoted to Coordinator, Hockey Programs and Site Coordinator at Laura Sims Skatehouse in November 2016. She has over 18 years of playing and coaching experience. Growing up in New Jersey, Casey played both boys and girls hockey before moving on to Northwood School in Lake Placid, NY, where she captained the girls' hockey team her junior and senior year. After Northwood, she attended Neumann University where she played four years of NCAA D-III hockey, served as captain her senior year, and graduated in May of 2016 with a Bachelor's Degree in Sport and Entertainment Management. Ryan McCanney - Senior Coordinator, Laura Sims Skate House
Ryan McCanney joined the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation in January of 2013 as a Programming Intern. After graduating from Neumann University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Sports & Entertainment Management, he was promoted to Coach. After receiving many opportunities in a leadership role on and off the ice, Ryan was promoted to the Assistant Site Coordinator of Hockey Operations at the Laura Sims Skate House. In October 2015, Ryan was promoted to Coordinator, Hockey Programs and is currently the Site Coordinator at Laura Sims. Along with overseeing programming at Scanlon, Ryan oversees the Snider Hockey League (SHL). For the past 4 years, Ryan has also been part of our DVHL coaching staff and helped lead the Snider Hockey Bantam A team to an Atlantic District Finals appearance in 2017. Nick Allison - Coordinator, Tarken Ice Rink
Nick Allison joined the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation in 2012 as a Coach at the Flyers Skate Zone in Pennsauken, NJ. In 2015, Nick was promoted to Assistant Site Coordinator. Nick helped lead our Bantam A team to Snider Hockey's first Atlantic District Championships. For the past two seasons Nick has coached at the Peewee level where in 2017 he led his Peewee A team to the Atlantic District Championships. Along with everything he does for Snider Hockey, Nick has also helps coach at the Atlantic District Developmental Camps. Frank Buggey - Coordinator, High School Programs
Frank Buggey joined the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation in June 2019 as a High School Postsecondary Counselor at Scanlon Ice Rink, following the completion of his M.S. in Higher Education Policy and Student Affairs degree at West Chester University. While completing his Masters, Frank supported and worked with WCU students on academic probation, focusing on academic coaching and success strategies. Frank is a lifelong resident of Philadelphia growing up in Fishtown and is a high school graduate of the Academy at Palumbo. In November 2019, Frank was promoted to High School Programs Coordinator, and is excited to support our high school students while they develop their individualized postsecondary plans. Gregg Caldaro - Coordinator, Facilities & Quality Assurance
Gregg Caldaro joined the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation in 2008 as a Coach, establishing the After School Excellence Program at Simons Recreation Center and Scanlon Ice Rink. Gregg was promoted to Coordinator, Hockey Operations in August 2012 to assist the foundation with ice rink related operations and maintenance projects. Colin Fafara - Coordinator, Penn Ice Rink & Goaltenders
Colin Fafara joined the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation in 2014 as a Coach, has coached numerous DVHL teams, served as Site Coordinator at Rizzo Rink, and led efforts to standardize goalie training. Colin is a graduate of Temple University, where he majored in Sport & Recreation Management. He was promoted to Coordinator, Hockey Programs in 2018 to be Site Coordinator for the Class of 1923 Arena at UPenn as Snider Hockey expands operations there, and will also oversee goaltender development across the entire organization. Erin Ficca - Coordinator, Alumni Programs
Erin Ficca joined the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation in July 2014 as an Academic Assistant, following her completion of M.A. in International Peace and Conflict Resolution, where she researched the impact sports can have on youth development in conflict areas. She also spent the 2014-2015 school year working in High School ESL support. Over the past two years, Erin has led academic programming at Simons Recreation Center and then at Scanlon Ice Rink. She has always been an avid sports enthusiast, playing Division III volleyball and softball for Arcadia University. After her promotion to Coordinator, Alumni Programs, Erin is excited to support students and young adults to discover their passions after Snider Hockey. Raul Figueroa - Coordinator, Scanlon Ice Rink
Raul Figueroa joined the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation in 2010 as a student. After graduating from the program in 2011, Raul joined the Scanlon staff as a Coach. He spent the next six years coaching the Squirts and Peewees in the Snider Hockey League. In 2017, Raul was promoted to Assistant Site Coordinator at Scanlon for his commitment and dedication to Snider Hockey he displayed as a member of the coaching staff. He served as Assistant Site Ccoordinator for two years before being promoted to Site Coordinator at Scanlon in July, 2019. Raul’s hire marks the first time a Snider Hockey student has joined the foundation's full-time staff. With over twenty years of hockey experience, Raul has enjoyed the many relationships he has formed and he is excited to continue building connections as Site Coordinator at Scanlon. Justin Foley - Coordinator, Simons Ice Rink
Justin Foley joined the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation in November 2013 as a Coach. After fine tuning his leadership skills on and off the ice, he was promoted to Assistant Site Coordinator at Scanlon Recreation Center. Along with serving as the Assistant Coordinator, Justin was also a Life Skills programming leader and helped implement off-ice programming at Scanlon. In July 2017, he was promoted to Coordinator, Hockey Programs and is currently the Site Coordinator at Simons Recreation Center. Justin has 20 years of hockey experience and is always looking for new ways to elevate our players’ experiences and make a lasting impact on the communities we serve. Julianna Hankinson - Coordinator, Content Engagement
Julianna Hankinson joined the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation as a Photography & Media Intern in January 2019. After graduating cum laude from Saint Joseph’s University with a B.S. in Sociology, she was hired as a part-time Program Assistant, Photography & Media. Julianna is passionate about creating quality visual content that educates and inspires. Previously, Julianna has worked with the American Cancer Society, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and various smaller non-profit organizations on internship and freelance projects. In September 2019, Julianna was promoted to her current position of full time Coordinator, Content Engagement. Shivani Katkam - Coordinator, Human Resources
Shivani Katkam joined the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation as a Human Resources Intern in September 2018. Following her internship, she was hired as a part-time Program Assistant and in December 2019, Shivani was promoted to her current position as full time Coordinator, Human Resources. She is currently pursuing her degree at Temple University and is due to graduate in May 2020 with her bachelor's in Human Resource Management and a minor in Education. As an avid volunteer in various Philadelphia youth based organizations, she is excited to continue working with an organization dedicated to empowering youth in the area. Cameron Kelly - Coordinator, Life Skills
Cameron joined Snider Hockey in the Summer of 2017 as a Life Skills and Healthy Living Coach. In that role Cameron not only led interactive lessons for students on and off the ice, but also worked closely with Life Skills and Healthy Living Coordinator Jeremy Gillam to grow and improve our Life Skills programs. A temple graduate with a degree in Psychology, Cameron also received additional training as an Up2Us Sports/Americorps Sports Based Youth Development Coach. Mubarak Lawrence - Coordinator, Service Learning & Career Development
Mubarak Lawrence joined the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation in 2018. Mubarak previously served as the Chief Operations Officer and co-founder of a non-profit start-up Rising Sons/Ones Up; which focused on providing opportunities of economic mobility for disconnected Millennials through civic engagement. Mubarak graduated from Ursinus College with a B.A. in Business and Economics and a Minor in Media and Communication. Immediately after graduating, he worked as a 2-term AmeriCorps member with City Year (2010-11) and VISTA (2011-12) in Philadelphia. Recently, Mubarak just completed his 2-year Echoing Green fellowship for Social Entrepreneurs. He is passionate about creating systematic and sustainable change that will eliminate the cycles of violence, illiteracy and poverty in low-income communities. Erin Robinson - Coordinator, Middle School Programs
Erin Robinson joined the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation in 2017. She received her undergraduate degree from Widener University and her graduate degree in Social Work from Boston University. For the last two years, she has worked with Snider Hockey middle school students and their families as they navigate the high school selection process and begin the next steps in their academic careers. Zaine Taff - Coordinator, Data & Evaluation
Zaine Taff joined the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation as a part-time Program Assistant, Data & Program Metrics in May of 2019. Originally from Texas, Zaine graduated Magna Cum Laude from Texas A&M University with a B.S. in Sport Management in May of 2018. An avid traveler and sports enthusiast, he decided to leave Texas to continue his education at Temple University. In December he will complete his master’s degree in Sport Business and Analytics. After 3 months as a part-time assistant he was promoted to his current position of full-time Coordinator, Data & Program Metrics in August of 2019.
