Homework Help

Homework Help is structured time for students to complete their schoolwork, get additional tutoring in a subject they find challenging, or simply have an adult look over their homework. It is available to all Snider students and is designed to help struggling students and give our high flyers the opportunity to achieve even more. These drop-in and virtual sessions are offered at each rink to make academic assistance easily accessible to all students.

Reading Challenges

Snider Reading Challenges

Through Snider Reading Challenges, we aim to enhance our commitment to literacy and access to books for our students, in addition to encouraging positive attitudes towards reading. Through our partnership with the platform Beanstack, students can participate in monthly reading challenges with their teammates and other Snider students. In cooperation with First Book Philadelphia, free books are made available through book fairs at our rinks. Students that track their reading progress will enjoy special prizes and invitations to special events. The Snider Reading Challenges will help motivate readers with badges and prizes for logging reading, completing activities, and submitting book reviews in user-friendly web and mobile apps.

Targeted Grade Boost

Targeted Grade Boost Tutoring

It’s proven that students in grades 6-12 who fail a core subject are at an increased risk for dropping out of high school. To address this concern and help students get back on track, students with grades below a C- in core subjects are encouraged to complete tutoring at no-cost through Targeted Grade Boost, which can take place virtually or in-person at our rinks. Students are matched with an Academic Instructor and complete an initial introductory meeting. The student and Academic Instructor work together for at least one hour each week on completing homework, studying, or building other academic skills.

Snider is partnered with Varsity Tutors to provide even more robust support to our students, particularly in their more rigorous classes.

Postsecondary Success

Snider creates a postsecondary-bound culture for all students. Our Postsecondary Success Programs encompasses admissions counseling and college readiness efforts. At every turn students receive and internalize a message that leads them to conclude that formal education does not end with high school — far from it — whether the next step is college, professional/trade school, or a career in the military, a labor union, or another field. Ultimately, students are supported at all academic crossroads.

99.6% of our students successfully matriculate from one grade level to the next, which keeps them on-track for on-time graduation. Remarkably, this happens in the same inner-city neighborhoods and schools that graduate less than 70% of their students enrolled in the ninth grade.

Academic All-Stars

The Academic All-Star program was developed to promote academic achievement and excellence. Similar to the Honor Roll, Snider Academic All-Stars have all A’s and B’s, no attendance issues, and no negative behavior marks. High-achieving students in the 4th grade and above are celebrated at least twice per school year via events like the Academic All-Star Weekend.

An average of 73% of Snider students earn all A’s and B’s each school year, with majority showing improvement each marking period.

Literacy Progression

Snider has distributed over 15,000 free books to students. Youth have logged more than 494,000 minutes of reading through Snider Reading Challenges.

Ultimately, 80.5% of students are reading at or above their grade level.

Accountability

On average, 2,800 report cards and progress reports are collected annually and used to ensure our student-athletes are on track for promotion from one grade to the next. Report cards are Snider’s only program requirement. They allow us to celebrate your student’s successes and offer assistance where it may be helpful. There is never a consequence for low grades.

My dad often refers to Snider as a miracle for my brothers and me because it has given us lifelong friends, goal-oriented learning, and academic support that we don’t have at school. Snider provides us with once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, including helping us go to high school and college, which we would not have been able to afford otherwise. Snider shows me how important an education, grades, and work-ethic are throughout adulthood. As a first-generation college student, I was always told that college would be important to securing a good job and being financially stable, but I never understood how to get there.

I chose to attend Neumann University for many reasons, including the Business program, the Women’s Ice Hockey team, and the resources on campus. Neumann’s location also offers a lot of opportunities for internships and continued involvement with Snider as an Alumni, which will ensure that I have a variety of career options in the future.

My biggest accomplishment this year was winning the 2020 Ed Snider Leadership Award. The achievement makes me feel hope for the future, which I have consistently strived to achieve. As a participant in the organization, I always find it imperative to hold myself to the high standard that my family and Snider have held me to throughout my life. I know that I will experience important life lessons in college that I will be able to pass down to students who follow in my footsteps.
