Bernie Parent’s Family Fishing Day Continues to Honor Late Flyers Legend, Raise Money for Snider Youth
One of Snider’s most anticipated summer events returned this July as families, supporters and partners gathered for the ninth annual Bernie Parent Family Fishing Day. Thanks to the generosity presenting sponsor, the Capoferri Family, Snider students traded the ice for the water for a day of fishing, connection, and community.
This year’s event carried a special meaning as it marked the first Bernie Parent Family Fishing Day without Bernie physically present. As his absence was deeply felt, his spirit was woven into every part of the day. More than a fishing tournament, this event has always been about bringing people together, celebrating family, and sharing the kindness, joy and generosity, to make everyone feel like family. Every moment of the day served as a reminder that the traditions he created continue to unite the Snider community.
Families boarded the Miss Avalon and spent the day fishing alongside fellow supporters while enjoying time together on the water, competing in the categories: largest fish by length, largest fish by weight, most unusual fish, most enthusiastic catch, and best group attire.
Attendees also heard from Snider’s Bernie Parent Goaltending Program Coordinator, Ally Frantzick, who shared her vision for the future of the Bernie Parent Goaltending Program and the lasting impact it will continue to have on Snider participants. Her remarks reflected the same commitment to mentorship and opportunity that Bernie championed throughout his life.
New this year, the event introduced the “It’s a Beautiful Thing” Award, honoring anglers who best embodied Bernie’s unforgettable spirit and positive attitude. One winner from each boat was selected based on nominations from Tournament Directors throughout the day. Whether it was helping a fellow angler, showing outstanding sportsmanship, keeping spirits high despite bad luck, or simply making the day more enjoyable for others, this award celebrates those who make the day a beautiful thing.
Bernie’s legacy continues to live on through the people and traditions he inspired as another memorable fishing trip come to a close. The annual fishing event remains a celebration of community, compassion and connection, to ensure that the future generations of Snider families will continue to experience the values Bernie held closest to his heart.
Snider extends its heartfelt gratitude to the Capoferri Family, the Miss Avalon and the Avalon Yacht Club for hosting us and every family, volunteer, sponsor and supporter whose generosity made this year’s event possible. Together, the event raised $71,721 for Ed Snider youth Hockey & Education, equating to total of $215,163 raised with 2:1 match!
