Ed Snider Youth Hockey & Education is proud of the work that our staff do on and off the ice. In order to spotlight the outstanding effort they put into the organization, we regularly interview a staff member about their time with Snider.
Featured in this staff spotlight are Jackie Hoffman & Kayla Littel, Academic Program Assistants. Jackie and Kayla have spent their summer creating meaningful academic experiences for our campers!
What made you get into your field in the first place
Jackie – My passion for education began after helping a friend’s sibling with special needs. Seeing the impact I could make inspired me to work at a daycare and eventually pursue a degree in Early Childhood Education. Watching a child’s face light up when they have that “aha” moment is what continues to inspire me every day.
Kayla – I actually didn’t grow up playing hockey. My background has always been in working with people, customer service, and the animal field. When I joined Snider, I quickly realized hockey was much more than a sport. It was a way to build confidence, create opportunities, and make a real difference in kids’ lives. That mission is what drew me in and kept me here.
How did you get involved with Snider?
Jackie – I was introduced to the Snider program by my now-fiancé and his family, who have been longtime supporters of the organization. Hearing about the positive impact Snider has had over the years inspired me to get involved. Once I started working at Tarken, I quickly understood why they spoke so highly of it.
Kayla- I was looking for an opportunity where I could combine my organizational skills with meaningful work. When I found Snider, I loved that it focused on both education and hockey. I started as an Academic coach, and it’s been incredibly rewarding getting to support students, families, and coaches while helping programs run smoothly.
What is your favorite memory with Snider?
Jackie – One of my favorite memories was before I officially joined Snider. In 2018, I attended the Flyers Alumni vs. Snider Alumni game at the Class of 1923 Arena. The rink was packed with families and fans, and the energy in the building was unforgettable. It was such a special event, and I even caught a T-shirt thrown into the stands by one of the alumni.
Kayla – It’s hard to pick just one, but seeing students genuinely excited about reading through our Beanstack challenges and celebrating their accomplishments has been incredibly rewarding. Watching kids gain confidence, whether it’s through reading, academics, or learning to skate. It reminds me why the work we do matters.
Who had the biggest influence on your career path?
Jackie- My biggest influences have been my mom, a single mother who always encouraged me to pursue whatever I was passionate about, and the children I’ve had the privilege of working with over the years.
Kayla- I’ve been fortunate to learn something from every role I’ve had, but the biggest influence has been the mentors and supervisors who trusted me with new responsibilities and encouraged me to keep learning and growing. They’ve helped me to grow professionally and shown me the importance of leading with patience and compassion.
What is the best piece of professional advice you’ve received?
Jackie – “Be the person people don’t have to worry about.” Being dependable, taking initiative, and following through are qualities I try to bring to everything I do.
Kayla – Always be willing to learn. You don’t have to know everything on day one, but if you’re willing to ask questions, stay curious, and keep improving, you’ll continue to grow.
What do you look forward to most about coming to work at Snider?
Jackie – I love spending time with the kids and families. Whether we’re helping with homework, playing Spot It!, or hanging up new artwork, there’s never a dull moment and the kids always have something hilarious to say.
Kayla – Knowing that every day is different and that what we do has a positive impact on our students and families. Whether I’m planning an event, helping with a reading program, or supporting our coaches, it’s rewarding to know my work contributes to creating meaningful experiences for our kids/families.
What is a valuable lesson you’ve learned from your work?
Jackie – I’ve learned that every child learns at their own pace and in their own way, so patience and flexibility are essential. I’ve also learned to be grateful for what I have because you never know what someone is going home to after they leave the rink.
Kayla – Small moments can have a lasting impact. Something as simple as encouraging a student, celebrating a milestone, or taking a few extra minutes to help a family can make a much bigger difference than we realize.
What are some fun facts your co-workers might not know about you?
Jackie – My entire schooling experience spanned eight different schools across three states.
Kayla – I have a degree in Wildlife Conservation! Before working at Snider, I volunteered at a wildlife rehabilitation center caring for injured and orphaned animals.
